THRIFT STORE'S PROCEEDS TO GO TO COMMUNITY

The Assistance League of Mid-Missouri is launching a thrift store in Columbia to raise money for local organizations.

Upscale Resale opened in the Broadway Shopping Center, 1729 W. Broadway, on April 15. The store will sell donated items ranging from clothing to toys and books to furniture and collectibles. Upscale Resale will be open Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tax deductible donations from the public will be accepted during store hours.

"A few Assistance Leagues have thrift shops nationally," said Becky MacLellan, co-chairperson for Upscale Resale. "They are real successful fundraisers. We've visited shops in Phoenix, one in Oregon and several in California and that was when we felt even more enthusiastic about trying it."

Proceeds from Upscale Resale will support projects of the Assistance League of Mid-Missouri, which include Links to Learning, Operation School Bell, "I Wonder Bags," Parent Packs, Kaboodle Kits, Assault Survival Kits and the Bookbags literacy program.

"We're expecting people to show up," said Sally Williams, the publicity chairperson for Upscale Resale. "But it's new to us too."

In 1998 and spring 1999, the Assistance League clothed 200 needy elementary schools and granted $20,000 to Columbia Public School teachers.
